South Africans don't rate their banks on interest rates or adverts. They rate them on what happens when something goes wrong: a frozen account, a payment that never arrives, a fraud claim, a callback that doesn't come. This free benchmark report measures that experience for every major bank.
Using Hellopeter's AI analysis of real customer reviews, we scored 10 South African banks across the five themes that define banking reputation. The result is a like-for-like picture of the sector, and it's stark.
Nine of the 10 banks analysed score between 0.7 and 1.3 on customer experience. One bank, GoTyme Bank, scores 3.1. Only three of the 41 industry groups Hellopeter scores average lower than banking.

GoTyme Bank Leads, and Nobody Is Close
GoTyme Bank (formerly TymeBank) is the only bank outside the “Terrible” band, and it leads all five themes. Its lead is built on people and speed: customers name its call-centre consultants for patience and for solving the problem on the first call. The gap of 1.8 points between GoTyme and the next bank is the widest between first and second place of any industry group in Hellopeter's AI analysis.
For FNB, Capitec, Absa, Standard Bank, Nedbank and the rest, the story is the same. Customers praise individual staff by name, then describe the process behind them failing: accounts frozen without warning, money that leaves and never arrives, and complaints closed without anyone making contact.

The Five Themes That Decide a Bank's Reputation
The report scores every bank on the five themes our AI consistently finds in banking reviews:
- Staff and branch experience (industry average 2.1): the sector's one relative strength. Customers name consultants who solved their problem.
- Customer service and communication (1.2): hold times, dropped calls and promised callbacks that never happen.
- Digital banking and security (1.2): app lockouts and fraud claims that end with the customer blamed.
- Transactions and dispute resolution (1.1): payments that vanish and disputes that run for months.
- Account access and management (1.1): accounts frozen for FICA or fraud checks with no warning and no timeline.
GoTyme Bank leads every theme. The widest gaps between the sector average and the best bank are on customer service and on staff and branch experience, both 2.2 points.

Why This Matters Now
When a South African checks a bank today, Google often answers first. In a check on 7 October 2026, searches for "FNB reviews" and "Nedbank reviews" each returned the bank's Hellopeter page as the first result, carrying Hellopeter's AI summary of its reviews. In both searches, Google's "People also ask" box included the question "Which bank has the most complaints in South Africa?" Your customer-experience reputation is the first thing the market is told about you.
