Every short-term insurer in South Africa sounds the same at the quote stage. The difference shows up at the claim, and it's enormous. This free benchmark report measures it.
Using Hellopeter's AI analysis of real customer reviews, we scored South Africa's short-term insurers on the experience their customers actually describe, across the five themes that define insurance reputation. The result is the clearest like-for-like picture of the sector that exists, and a warning for any insurer that thinks a good acquisition funnel hides a poor claims experience.
The short-term average sits at 3.2 out of 5, but the range runs from 4.3 for the leaders to below 1.0 for the long tail. In insurance, your reputation is a choice, not an industry condition.
What the Report Reveals
Short-term insurance is a tale of two industries. A cluster of insurers, OUTsurance, Prime South Africa, King Price, Blink by MiWay, Naked and MiWay, score 4.0 to 4.2 out of 5 and rate Great on customer experience. Below the average sits a long tail, with several insurers under 2.5 and three under 2.0, where customers describe slow claims, disputed payouts and silence when it matters most.
What separates the two isn't branding or price. It's the claim. Claims handling is the sector's weakest theme at 2.9 out of 5, level with repair quality, and it's the clearest dividing line in the data: more insurers are getting worse on it than better. The leaders win on the claim itself: they pay quickly and communicate while they do it. Cheaper premiums and slicker ads don't move this line.

The Five Themes That Decide an Insurer's Reputation
The report scores every insurer across the five themes our AI consistently finds in insurance reviews:
- Claims handling and resolution (industry average 2.9): the weakest theme, and the one that makes or breaks reputation.
- Repair, tow and service-provider quality (2.9): the partners an insurer chooses are judged as the insurer itself.
- Communication and updates (3.0): silence during a claim is one of the loudest complaints.
- Pricing, premiums and excess (3.1): not just the number, but whether it's explained.
- Frontline agent and consultant service (4.3): the industry's genuine strength, and the reason the quote stage flatters everyone.
The full report ranks every insurer on each theme and shows exactly where the leaders pull away.

Why This Matters Now
When a South African researches an insurer today, they don't just read reviews. Google's AI summary reads the reviews for them, and increasingly it quotes Hellopeter's TrustIndex as a fact in its answer. Your customer-experience reputation is no longer something a prospect has to dig for. It's the first thing the market, human and machine, is told. A poor claims reputation is now a customer-acquisition problem, not just a service one.
This report is the benchmark for understanding where you stand, and what your next customer is being told before they ever request a quote.
